Welcome to Akai Ryuu Kendo

Thanks for visiting our site. Kendo, the art of Japanese fencing is very much alive in south Wales. Our club has two practice sessions each week in Cardiff. If you have any queries please e-mail or telephone (see contact details). For a wider picture try the British Kendo Association site.

Our club name 'Akai Ryuu' means Red Dragon - not only because of the Welsh red dragon, but conveniently the year 2000(the year the club was concieved) was the Year of the Dragon, which was Akai Ryuu club 'new' conception.
The club welcomes any one who has the genuine enthusiasm to discover what this sport/martial art is about. At present in the UK, it is very much a male dominated sport/martial art- but Ladies, don't let that put you off. The odds are great ! At a guess for Britain, for every 10 men, there is probably only 1 woman. More and more women are thankfully taking up Kendo around the world, so much so that in countries like America and parts of Europe the intake of women exceeds the men joining, but we have not reached that stage yet in Britain.

It is perhaps the fairness of Kendo that makes it appeal to so many different types of people; what ever their sex, age, weight, height, minor disabilities, race or religion. There is no segregation, everyone trains together. It is tough mentally too. Being physically fit of course helps, but in Kendo, as in other sports you are only as fit as the sport you practice!

Children in Kendo. Unfortunately there are only a few dojos that specifically teach children, these clubs are mainly in London. Due to the physicality of the sport, our club is reluctant to take juniors under the age of 14. Children are not only physically still developing, but the approach to teaching them is quite different(contact Gloucester Kendo Club). The situation may change if there is sufficient demand - after all they could be the future of the sport/martial art. Anyone 14 or older should be physically & mentally able to cope with training with adults and what's more we would like to actively encourage 5th and 6th formers to come and join us. Come along to one of our practice sessions.

Our club re-established in 2000. But we have the advantage of Kendoka who have practiced at a number of UK dojos as well as other experienced Kendo palyers. Come along and we will endeavour to pass on our enthusiasm for Kendo.
